Spider Web and Halloween!!

Ok..so first off... no we don't have more spiders. At least not the fuzzy ones that crawl around on your ground. But, we did decide to crochet a giant spider web and put it in the corner of our bedroom so that we could feel like we decorated for Halloween! It's pretty legit :) I'll attach a picture at the bottom!

Tuesday night we went over to a members home for dinner. After sitting at TV dinner tables that reminded me of Matilda, we pulled out our hymn books. Hermana Pizarro wanted me to tell her how some of the hymns sounded because she is in charge of the music for church. After explaining that I had no idea how these songs sounded, I started sight reading them and it was fun to sing them to her even though I had never heard them before either! Blessings come from studying music before :)

Wednesday night we got to go to a fireside for the Pathway program here in Denver! It was so exciting to learn more about the program and how they are offering and ESL program here for the Spanish speakers in our wards. It's super exciting to see the progress and the support that the church has for members everywhere. These people would never have the chance anywhere else to take college classes, and now they do! And, it's flexible enough that many members are excited about the opportunity. Of course, we got called the night before to see if we could come to play piano and direct the music for the fireside, so we went along and enjoyed the night and saw all the members from both Spanish wards which was super fun!

We have been helping a member to study for her citizenship test and it's really interesting. So, history was by far not my favorite subject, but it's kinda fun now to learn all about it! I remember taking an American Heritage class back freshman year at BYU and it's fun the things I do remember from that! But, let me tell you, if they gave me that test right now, I would definitely not pass it! I guess that's why they give us books and things to study from so that we have a chance to pass the tests :)

We got to go visit Maria R this week, and it's been awhile! I had met her before in the past, but we hadn't been able to go and visit her recently because of her work schedule. So we finally got to see her and it was awesome! She has so many questions but is so excited about learning more of the gospel. It's truly amazing to see the difference it makes with someone when they have questions about the gospel that they really want to find the answers! We have been praying for more opportunities to teach people who are truly excited about the gospel, and our prayers are being answered!

One of our appointments fell through while Hermana Hawkins was with us in a trio. She is another Spanish called sister that just got here this transfer as well, but she is serving right now in an English area. So, she comes out with us every week to get some practice in a Spanish environment too. We have been having a blast with her! But, we decided to walk around Friday morning to talk to people outside while we waited for another lady to get back home so we could help her out. And we met this guy named Roberto. He said that one of his best friends is Mormon but that he hasn't talked to him in a long time. He had never met with the missionaries before but had loved everything that his friend had taught him about the gospel. They had met up every week to talk about the Book of Mormon, so we testified to him and asked if he would accept to have us come to teach him and he said yes. So, we gave him a Book of Mormon and he was super excited to read and to continue to learning about the gospel. :)

Our family definitely has a way of living much different than I am used to! But, we were talking to the wife the other day and she was saying how she really wants to find her own conversion. She isn't a member of the church, but goes every week with her family. We are helping her to do her part in her own conversion to the gospel. It is hard at times to know how we can help her because she lives with us, but we have come to realize that it shouldn't matter. She is a special daughter of God who really can find her own answers from God. She is amazing and I want more than anything to see her dressed in white being baptized, and then going through the temple with her family to be sealed for time and all eternity! It's so exciting to see the blessings that come through this amazing gospel. They are eternal! Nothing else can bring us such great joy!

I know that this gospel is the true gospel of Jesus Christ. I have asked God to let me know, and He always answers my prayers!

I love you all!
Hope you have a fantastic week! Have a great Halloween and I want to see pictures of everyone's costumes!!!!

We love pumpkin...so we made pie, and cookies, and pancakes...YUM! Don't worry, we shared most of it with our family and the elders. But, it was definitely delicious! :)

So....this is what our faces look like when Elder Brown is around...and he decided to almost drop our cameras on the ground!! But good thing Hermana Jones has reflexes like a fly and caught them! Yup...this face happens at least 10 times a day. We just aren't quite sure yet how to act around him yet. But, it was a fun Halloween Party!

um...klutz?

Hey everyone!!!!

So, this week has been pretty fantastic, but so random too! But, life is great :)

So...funny story...
Hermana Jones and I managed to lock ourselves out of our room and into our room...twice. Wednesday morning, we were waking up early to go to the temple. It was about 530 AM and we were ready to walk out the door to catch a ride with some other sisters from their house. So, we locked our room and headed downstairs, only to find out that we were missing a few things. You know, our keys and the phone. Yup, definitely no bueno! So, we couldn't get into the room and we didn't have the keys to use the car, and we didn't have a phone to call someone for a ride. And, it's only 530 in the morning! So, after many failed attempts at picking a lock (apparently I never learned how to do that one while I was younger. It could have come in handy!) we decided to wake up Hermano Garcia and see if they happened to have another key to our room. After a phone call with Monse, we were affirmed that the only key was locked on the other side of the room. So, Hermano tried to use cards to get the lock to open from the inside, but nothing worked. It only bent the cards. He then carefully ripped off the outside of the door knob, we got the front part to click off and disconnect from the rest, then used tweezers to turn the lock and it opened! Woohoo! So, we threw all the pieces carefully into the room, grabbed our things and drove to the temple! It was just about 645 by that time, so an hour later or so....and we weren't going to make it to our 730am session. But, I guess God really does work in mysterious ways! As we were driving to the temple, we realized that it must be for a reason that we had to be sooo late going to our session and decided to find the reason why. As we were sitting in the celestial room, I was just thinking to myself about so many things. And, then I looked up and we were alone there with only an older lady sitting on the couch across from us two. I noticed she was crying and decided to go over and give her a hug. For the next few minutes, she just cried into my shoulder. I just held tight and could feel the spirit enveloping us so strongly. I don't know exactly what she is going through. All I know is that God needed me to be right there to give her a hug and to help her out that day. I'm glad that God works through us to bring miracles into the lives of others!

Ok, so the second time...this time we locked ourselves into our room. Actually...we both managed to lock ourselves into different rooms...at the same time. It was great. We decided this morning that we should probably take some time and fix our door knob. It has been broken all week. So, I unscrewed the one on our door and on our old room. We had bought a door knob when the old one broke right after I got to this area. I was planning on swapping them and putting the old one back on in the other room. But, I didn't take out the actual inside part that locks into the frame...so Hermana Jones closed the door without thinking. Then I was trying to take apart the other door and it's difficult to unscrew the door while it's open. So, I closed the other door and took apart the doorknob. Then, I tried opening the door to get the other side off...and it wasn't opening! So, I called for Hermana Jones to come open it and said that she was stuck too and couldn't get out of the room!! Yikes!! Luckily, I was able to get the door open by using the other side of the knob and sticking my fingers around it twisting. Then I went to save my companion from the same dilemma. haha Yup, we are pretty great at getting stuck in places!

Friday, we wanted to go visit a less active member and she said she was really busy. We asked with what. She told us she was making Tamales and would be working all day, so we decided to go help! That didn't take too much persuading. haha So, I can say that I have made Tamales start to finish! It was so much fun! I'm not sure that I wanted to know what was used to make them...but they are sooo good! So, I guess I'll still eat them :)

Saturday we went on exchanges with the sister trainer leaders! I was in the Spanish area with Sister Makasini and she is awesome! It was so much fun :) We went and taught a family that wants to be baptized! And while we were teaching, most of them got up and just left! So, we were left with about 4 of them...out of the 14 that live there. haha Yup, it reminds me of our house so much when we are there! Well, the mom then continued to tell us that they all left because they want to make lunch for us! So, we stuck around and enjoyed tacos with their family and got to really see their admiration for the patience we have with them. And, some of them came to church too!! It was super exciting :) I can't wait to go back this week and see how they liked it! We went to give service by singing to a few older ladies and a man who live with an in home nurse in a house. It's pretty cool actually. And, as we were singing and talking, the lady wanted to show us around the house....when we got to her room in the basement we all were in shock! The entire basement is her bedroom...and the walls are completely full of closets. It was crazy!!! And, then she began pulling things out of the closet and handing them to us, told us to try them on, and gave it to us! It was so much fun. :) And we came home with some pretty great stuff too! It's been really fun as my companion and I started collecting sweaters. But, they have to be the really old ones and big that you don't quite know what to do with. And then we wear them just to take pictures and laugh. haha It was pretty great!

Oh yeah...and it snowed!!!!! We went outside Friday morning and there was snow!! Woohoo! :) And...my comp has never used a snow scraper to take the snow off the car. She is from Mesa, Arizona and has only been in the snow like once. haha So, I let her try it out! It was hilarious! I was taking pictures...and then continued by throwing snow at her as she was attempting to carefully take all the snow off the car. I couldn't believe it! She looked like she was trying to paint a masterpiece or something because she had no idea what to do with this stick that had a brush on the end of it. It was fantastic. And then we went over to Brent's place to make breakfast for all the people that live there. It was so much fun! And then we stuck around to help out for a bit! Service is one of the best times of the week! We have so much fun and the people there really appreciate all that we do for them :)

Thursday afternoon at service, we were helping to clean the kitchen and all the toys. Then, they asked if we could make a really cool train that the kids would like to come and play with. So, Hermana Jones and I spent about an hour making up a really sweet train! It went around the table and the two tracks wrapped up and around each other. It was legit! :) We had so much fun making it, and then we took some pictures of course, and there had to be a dead end that said "no bueno." That's our district's slogan for everything that goes wrong...we just say 'no bueno' and then we can all laugh about it. :) It's pretty great!

We have been working really hard in the area to get things going. Right now we are trying to get more members and get some investigators who are really ready to hear the gospel. We met with a family Sunday night who are awesome! It's Araceli and Israel and they are super excited to hear more and to do everything to really know what is best in their lives right now. We invited them to be baptized after the first lesson and they were so excited to learn more so that they could know for sure :) I can't wait to continue to teach them!

This week has been a bit of a challenge with goals and getting the lessons in that we need to teach, but I feel like we are really working hard to get things done and to find the people that are really ready to hear. I hope we can work super hard this week as well!

Well, I'm off for another week! I hope you all are doing fantastic and I would love to hear from you :)

Love you tons!

Sick, but still running!

So, I guess it's not really a surprising thing to be sick again, but sometimes it just gets annoying! You know you're sick a lot when everyone asks how you are...every time they see you. haha I guess I just need to get used to that though! It's been happening for so many years now that it's a part of my life. I go see someone, they ask how I'm feeling, and then they are either content or concerned for a few minutes and the conversation continues. I guess that doesn't change no matter where you are. But, I guess I would take that over no one caring or asking...I'm not sure.

This week has been a bit crazy. We had a meeting this week with all of the sister missionaries in the mission...there are a lot! Every transfer we have another 10 or so coming in and we are around 70 now! My companion and I were just sorta laughing throughout the meeting because most of what they said really didn't apply to us. We are both outgoing and crazy girls who don't ever have trouble with depression or homesickness or anything else mentally. We are content with who we are and love being here. So, I'm really glad we talked about everything we did, but I am even more grateful that I don't have to worry about those types of problems. I just have to deal with my thyroid...or lack of one at that. Someday I'll figure out how to deal with it...for now I'll just keep going!

We met Olivia at her apartment Tuesday night and had a fantastic lesson with her, even through she was really nervous. She was going in to see if she could get her permanent green card Wednesday and was freaking out a little bit. So, Wednesday morning, we brought the elders over to give her a blessing. She loved it, and she is trying to find ways to calm her nerves down more. We suggested reading the scriptures and praying more, so she is going to try that this week. We went back again over the weekend and she loved talking to us. She really wants to come to church, and she accepted to baptism too! She just needs to get her work schedule switched so that she can come!

We have been working with Tonancy and her family a lot. They have accepted baptism, and we are working for a date, but they still haven't been able to come to church. This past week they were super excited to come! But, Tonancy ended up in the hospital Saturday night with a bad infection, so she was sleeping all day Sunday. We went over Saturday morning with them, and we had a great lesson! We were talking about the gospel of Jesus Christ and how they can follow the example of Jesus Christ more in their lives. It was great because we had some fun activities to do with each part and all the kids were really excited. Each of them wanted a Book of Mormon, but we still needed another 3 in English that we didn't even have in the car! We have given out so many recently it's crazy! Their family is awesome though, there are 6 kids in her family, and then another 3 in the other family that lives there, plus her sister. So, in total, there are 13 people living there... I think. It reminds me of our house a lot, except they live in a little 2 bedroom apartment with one bathroom and a tiny kitchen and living room. Sooo....there are just people everywhere. They are all so excited to read and to learn more though all the time! I can't wait for them to be able to learn more as a family and find a way to really progress and get to church! :)

We also saw Luz and her family too! We finally got to meet her husband Luis last week and he is awesome! They are all so excited to learn about the gospel and to come to church, but Luis's work sometimes calls him sunday morning to come in...and the rest of the family doesn't want to go without the dad. So, we are working to find a way they can come to church too! It's amazing to see the influence good parents have on their kids! This family is amazing, and their kids are so sweet and excited to learn too. Every lesson, the kids all come in and stay sitting with us, looking at the pictures and participating in everything! They are going to absolutely love primary too when they get to come this week!

This weekend was a miracle...just a miracle. In my last area, there was a family that we have been teaching...well ALL the missionaries have been teaching....like literally. They have been coming to church for 2.5 years already...and never got baptized. At first it was because she wasn't divorced and that they weren't legally married. So, there were a few problems there, but then there were other things impeding their progress in the church. And, then something changed. No one really knows what, but something did, and they finally decided to get married and baptized, and all of it happened this weekend!!!! So, Friday night we got to go to a wedding!! It was so exciting and I got to see everyone there again. :) And Sunday after church we had their baptism! It was great. We were all sorta joking because we have never seen someone so scared of the water! But, it's alright, with a little help everything worked out great :)

Sunday was exciting! We didn't have any of the families at church, but we did have our recent convert, Maria, and her entire family there! Her husband isn't a member, but we taught him a short lesson Saturday afternoon and then he was at church for the first time! It was pretty great :) I'm not sure if he is really interested, but at least he felt interested or comfortable enough to come to church and stay for sacrament meeting. It was fun to see them walk in together as a family for the first time ever!

The family we live with, the Garcias, are awesome. And we have been spending a lot of time with them. Monse, the wife, isn't a member, but she definitely loves the gospel! Yesterday for Pday, we spent the whole day at home cleaning with them. The two boys, Axel (10) and Yahir (2) are super funny, but a bit crazy and spoiled. So, all morning we were cleaning our Yahir's room because we were swapping into his room so that they could move the sala upstairs into our room. So, after cleaning out toys and tons of coats of Hermano's, we finally got everything out enough to clean the room. We vacuumed...about 6 times. Then washed the carpet and all the walls before beginning to move in our things. The elders came over for lunch and we made sandwiches and they helped to get all the furniture into our new room. It was nice to have them help because Axel wanted to go outside to play soccer, so we went out into the street to play for about an hour and it was super fun! When we left later that night for appointments, the upstairs was still a mess and the desk was taken apart sitting in the hallway. So, we still have a bit of work to do before it's all done!

Last night, we had Hermana Hawkins come with us to fhe at a member's home! She is a Spanish called Hermana that just got here 2 weeks ago as well, but was put into an English area with an English speaking sister. So, she doesn't get much practice teaching or listening in Spanish. We had an awesome night though with the Castillo's! We read the story of Samuel the Lamanite and then afterwards acted it out! The dad was Samuel up on the wall and then we all took part in throwing "fiery darts and rocks" at him! The stuffed animals and pillows were supposed to go around him, but it's so much more fun when you just hit him :) haha It was great though and the whole family was really excited to have so much fun! The dad isn't too active in the church either, and he was really excited to see the way that he can apply these stories to his life right now. Hopefully we can help them to be stronger in the gospel and receive more blessings together as a family!

This gospel is amazing! We have so many opportunities everyday to serve and to be stronger in the gospel ourselves, but also to help others do the same! I love how so many people can have an influence in our lives for good, and now I have the chance to do the same for others. We have been using the scripture, 1 Nephi 11:17 a lot recently. My companion absolutely loves it, and now I do too! It pretty much says, "God loves you, so everything will be okay." That really is what happens in life. We don't need to know everything, we just have to accept that we don't know it. We need to find ways to be better and to learn more, but we don't need to know everything. God loves us, and that is sufficient! I hope that you all have an amazing week and that you can always remember the love that God has for you! He really does love you individually and wants you to be happy. Remember that you are always in my prayers.

I love you all!

Words from God are always needed

Hermana Giron before she got on the transfer train up north! Crazy!!
Hey everyone!

First off, I hope Matt and CJ had fantastic birthdays!!! Happy Birthday!!
And, I hope all of you enjoyed General Conference this weekend because it was amazing!

So, this weekend was General Conference! And can I just say, I'm pretty sure it's getting shorter and shorter. It started and then one minute and it was over! It was absolutely phenomenal. I hope all of you went to conference searching for an answer to one of your questions, because I definitely did! I received so many answers and it was absolutely amazing. We were sitting at the church watching conference with all of the other missionaries in English while our ward sat in and watched it in the chapel in Spanish. I know...I should be listening in Spanish, but my companion just got here this week and I would have felt really bad if she couldn't understand anything. Plus, I'm pretty sure I still understand much more in English as it is!

I was thinking a lot about how to gain more strength by depending more on the Lord. I have still been fighting for my physical strength recently but I know that if I strengthen myself more spiritually that God will help me to understand my trials better as I face them. As I was sitting in conference, I was searching for ways to be spiritually strengthened right now in my life. It was incredible! I realized that in order to really strengthen ourselves spiritually is a process of faith and endurance. If we want to run the race of life and succeed to our goal of eternal life, we must be able to endure the trials and overcome the obstacles placed in our paths. Right now, I have so much to be grateful for! I have an amazing opportunity to serve a mission for the Lord and to be out on His errand. I have an incredible companion who helps me to learn more and to enjoy every moment of life! And I have family and friends who support me on my mission. And here, I can see miracles happen everyday! I decided that if I wanted to be strengthened, I need to put in the effort and the self-discipline necessary. I need to grow closer to my Savior and my God and strive everyday to be a better me! My studies are one of my most cherished moments of the day, and I want to be better at using them fully. Our days are planned to the hour, sometimes to the minute, and because of that, I really can make sure to use each minute to the fullest.

Sunday night, we went to see a family that we are teaching and this is the first time they have all been together. We were teaching about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and how prophets help and guide us today in our lives. I asked the question, "what can we do now to become closer to Christ?" We got a lot of different responses from the parents and from each one of the kids. It was amazing! First, they answered by going to church, praying, reading the scriptures, following the prophet today and being a better family. One of the younger sons then said, "Oh, I know! We have to be baptized too!" It was super cute because he isn't old enough yet to be baptized into the church, but it got the parents excited about learning more so that they can be baptized soon with the older children too! It is amazing the difference it is to teach a family and to know that they can seek out the blessings available in this life for eternal families! I can't wait for them to get baptized and to be sealed together as a family in the temple one day. They would be the best members ever! :)

So, this first week with my new daughter has been awesome! She is amazing, and definitely didn't speak any Spanish before her mission. But, that's alright! She has been awesome at adding in her testimony and she really does understand a lot. We just need to work really hard at speaking Spanish all the time so that she can learn it quickly and be ready to speak and to help out in the lessons more. She has so much knowledge of the gospel that it's amazing! I love the time we have each day to share what we are learning about the scriptures. And then we get to go out and teach. She loves the chance to talk to the kids too because they actually speak Spanish, but there is power to her simple testimony when it is said in Spanish. There is something about it. People really appreciate the effort people put into speaking and communicating in their native language , even if we may not speak very well. I have taken for granted at times the gift I do have for speaking Spanish. I understand almost everything, and speak to everyone. I don't even think about it anymore, but I know that I came a really long way. Working with Hermana Jones really helps me to see how far I have come. I remember being terrified to share an experience in Spanish because I didn't know any of the words. I would have to practice just the same way we are now. And now it comes without even having to think about the fact that I am speaking in a different language. God really does help us when we are striving our best to learn and to succeed in all we do. He really knows us individually and knows how to help us!

This week I have realized more and more the effect the spirit has on my life. There are so many things that are going on around me, and if we don't follow the spirit, we won't be in the right place. I think that the opportunity to train has helped me so much to have the spirit stronger in my life. I can know what these people need to hear. We are lead to people each and every day that we wouldn't have met if we didn't walk a certain direction. I want to continue to seek the guidance everyday of the spirit so that I can depend more on God to lead and direct me.

I hope that you all have an amazing week! If you haven't had the chance to listen/watch conference, I would definitely suggest it! It is amazing, and it is life-changing. Make sure that you find ways to apply it's teachings more to your lives right now! There is always something that we can do.

Be a better you today than you were yesterday, be a better you tomorrow than you were today! I hope that we can all seek to be a little better each and every day as we strive to be more like Christ.

I love you all!

My Daughter!!

Hey everyone,

So, the day has come! I have a new daughter :) And the reason for the email today.  Her name is Hermana Jones and just got here from the Mexico MTC yesterday! She is awesome, and knows about as much Spanish as someone who was studying for six weeks in the MTC...oh wait, yup that's what she did. So, I am teaching her Spanish and trying to figure out how to work here in this area after only serving here for 6 weeks! But, I am so excited!!

It's definitely been a great week. My last companion, Hermana Giron, left to go up north to an English ward. There are so many Spanish missionaries in the mission that there isn't enough room in the Spanish wards. There are already 9 missionaries in our ward and at least 8 in each other one! But, there is still a ton of work to be done!
We are working a lot with the less active members in our area. They have slowly but surely started to come back to church! It was so exciting this week when we sat in the back waiting for some people to get there, and one by one all of the families we have been teaching recently came in to sacrament!! So exciting! Now, if we can only get the same success with our investigators too! But, miracles do happen, and they are everyday :)

This past week, we were going to visit Elizabeth and Rosario, but when we showed up to the house, both of them were gone and only the two kids were home. They are 11 and 10 and neither one was interested about learning about God or anything for that fact. But, as I began talking to them, they both came over and started listening, then their other 2 friends joined and by the time the lesson was over, there were 6 of them there! They kept saying how it was like school, but better because they actually thought it was interesting. haha We didn't want to go in because their mom wasn't there, so we just stood at the door. My companion went and made phone calls, so I was all on my own! But, it was so much fun! I love teaching kids because they have such a joy for knowledge. We ended up talking about stories in the Bible and the Book of Mormon. I explained a lot about the Plan of Salvation and how we all lived with our Heavenly Father before coming to this life. By the time we left, they had learned how to pray and were really excited for us to come back so that we could teach them! Emmanuel came to church on Sunday too, and I'm not sure how he liked the classes, but we will find out this week. He said sacrament was a little boring, but I guess that's a little normal for kids to say when It's fast and testimony meeting. haha

Friday night I got the call saying that I was going to be training this transfer, and everyone had called it. I think I would have been more surprised if I hadn't been training! We went to a training meeting Saturday morning and then took time Sunday going around with Hermana Giron to say goodbye to everyone. She has been in the area for about 7 months, so she knows everyone! But, it was fun because then I got to see all of them too :) We packed her up and cleaned the room Monday morning before going to drop her off on the transfer train and head up to the mission office!

I'll have a lot more to say next week, but because we came to email for a bit today, I am anxious to get out to work with Hermana Jones! We have a busy day ahead of us!

You know that feeling you have when you have been studying for way too long and your eyes just start closing and you can't do anything about it? Well, that's what happens at about hour 2.5 in our studies...and we have 4 every morning! It's crazy how much time we spend sitting in our room studying, every morning! But, it's so great! I just have to keep getting up and moving around so that I don't fall asleep on the ground. But, there is a lot of work to be done to get ready to teach for the day. I can't just say, "let's teach this..." because then we have to make sure to practice it so she knows the words in Spanish! It's going to be great though! Two gringas (aka American's who try to speak Spanish...) walking down the street doing just that...trying to speak Spanish. :P Keep us in your prayers!

Well, I hope you all have a great week! Love you tons!
